Rhythm and blues journeyman Bill Doggett began his musical career as a church pianist as a young boy in the 1920s. He played in several blues and jazz combos before finally having a hit with the 4 million-selling Honky Tonk in 1956. Doggett died in 1996.

    I’m sure it featured in the classic David Lynch film ‘Blue Velvet’. Reminds me of my student days going to the Glasgow Film Theatre !

    I recognised the music immediately and it brought back so many memories
    of my National Service in Libya from 1956/1957.It was the music that introduced a pop programme from the American Wheelus Air Base in Tripoli
    which played all the latest from America.
