The H&M Christmas ad for 2016 is something of a spectacular, and certainly a contender for best Christmas ad of the year. Directed by Wes Anderson in his inimitable style, it stars Adrien Brody as a train guard who brings his delayed passengers together for a special Christmas Day brunch. The full-length (3:52, see above) film features two music tracks. The first is Little Drummer Boy by the Harry Simeone Chorale (iTunes) (sometimes credited as “Choral” or “Choir”). Little Drummer Boy was written by teacher Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941, and popularised in 1951 by the Trapp Family Singers. The second track is Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono (iTunes) (released as John & Yoko / Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir), from 1971. The short (0:30, see below) broadcast TV ad features a different third track, O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree), the German folk song-turned Christmas carol. It was re-scored for the ad by Alex Baranowski, and this version isn’t available to download, but you can get a version of O Tannenbaum by the Harry Simeone Chorale as part of their Christmas Festival medley (iTunes).
