Sainsbury’s traditionally waits until after Remembrance Sunday to launch its Christmas TV ad, and here is the 2016 edition. It’s the animated tale of a busy dad, Dave, who realises that the greatest gift he can give at Christmas is his time. The sentiment is nice, and the the animation looks lovingly crafted. It’s the soundtrack that will get most people talking, though, as Sainsbury’s have managed to persuade James Corden to take time out from his busy schedule to squeeze in yet another TV ad. (We reckon this is James’s sixth UK TV ad for a fifth different brand within the last 12 months.) James is singing the catchy theme song The Greatest Gift. If it sounds a bit like something the Muppets might sing (a compliment!), that’s because it was written by Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords, who won an Oscar for writing the song Man Or Muppet. The Greatest Gift by James Corden has been released as a single in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, and is available to download on iTunes.
