McDonald’s promises a taste of summer in this TV ad, with the new frozen strawberry lemonade drink from the McCafe iced range. The suitably cool lounge soul soundtrack is provided by Young-Holt Unlimited and their 1968 single Soulful Strut. Young-Holt Unlimited were Eldee Young and Isaac Holt, along with third member Ken Chaney. Curiously, however, none of them are thought to have played on Soulful Strut. The track had been recorded a few months earlier by singer Barbara Acklin and session musicians the Brunswick Studio Band under the title Am I the Same Girl. Producer Carl Davis removed Acklin’s vocals, renamed the track Soulful Strut, and credited it to Young-Holt Unlimited. Soulful Strut was a top five hit in the US and Canada, while Acklin’s Am I The Same Girl, released in 1969, failed to make the top 40. Am I The Same Girl was subsequently covered by the likes of Dusty Springfield and Swing Out Sister. But it was Young-Holt Unlimited, the Milli Vanilli of 1968, who had the biggest hit. Soulful Strut is available to download on iTunes.
