Tesco makes what initially looks like an attempt to slightly subvert the standard Christmas TV ad, with shopper Ruth Jones hearing Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody over the supermarket PA system and thinking aloud: “Oh for crying out loud, Christmas? It’s only November.” Of course, she then thinks of all the things she needs to buy for Christmas – from Tesco, naturally – and it becomes clear that for big retailers November isn’t too early for Christmas TV ads or Christmas music on supermarket PAs because they really do persuade us to buy a lot more stuff.
