Advert: John Lewis – Christmas 2017 Moz The Monster
Music: Elbow – Golden Slumbers
The curiously British cultural event that is the annual launch of the John Lewis Christmas TV ad is here, with the 2017 effort presenting the tale of a noisy and playful monster under the bed named Moz, in a short film directed by Oscar-winner Michel Gondry. The music track is something of a surprise, after various media outlets wrongly reported rumours of a tribute to George Michael, supposedly with a cover of Wham!’s Last Christmas. Instead, the song is a cover of The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers by Elbow, the band from Bury led by Guy Garvey. (John Lewis have of course missed a trick by not getting Steven “Moz” Morrissey to sing the Moz the Monster song…) Golden Slumbers was originally released on The Beatles’ Abbey Road album in 1969. The Elbow version will be included on the band’s “Best Of” compilation, out on 24 November, and you can download Golden Slumbers by Elbow on iTunes. John Lewis are selling a range of Moz The Monster gifts, including soft toys and mugs with a donation made to Barnados, plus story books, pyjamas and slippers. You can also make your own monster, all via JohnLewis.com.
