Best of Christmas 2013

This year’s Christmas ads have had well over a million hits at TV Ad Music, but which have been the most popular? Here’s a run-down of the top ten most-clicked Christmas TV Ad Music of 2013:

#10: John Lewis – The Bear & The Hare Watch the ad
Music: Lily Allen – Somewhere Only We Know iTunes / Amazon

John Lewis’s much-hyped Bear & Hare animation generated a number one single for Lily Allen, with her cover of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know. But it was relatively unpopular with TV Ad Music visitors, receiving just a few thousand clicks, perhaps because it was so ubiquitous that few felt the need to seek it out.

#9: Debenhams – Christmas Wishes Made Fabulous Watch the ad
Music: Foxes – Youth (Orchestral) iTunes / Amazon

Youth by Foxes was already a popular TV Ad Music download courtesy of previous Debenhams ads, and this orchestral version also proved a hit, soundtracking a festive Designers at Debenhams gift ad.

#8: – Christmas Gifting
Music: Robert Farnon – Silent Night (Kyson Remix) iTunes / Amazon’s motion-controlled TV ads and eclectic music selection have proved popular with TV Ad Music visitors this year, and the brand’s Christmas effort was no exception, featuring a remix of conductor Robert Farnon’s 1950s arrangement of Silent Night by German producer Kyson.

#7: TK Maxx – The Moment Watch the ad
Music: Tom Player – Only You iTunes

Tom Player’s orchestral arrangement of Yazoo’s 1982 hit Only You was specially recorded for this TK Maxx Christmas ad by a 30-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studios. “The best advert in a long time,” commented Russell Keil on the TV Ad Music website. “Simple but powerful. Well done.”

#6: Marks & Spencer – Christmas 2013 Watch the ad
Music: Guy Farley – Believe in Christmas Download from

TV Ad Music regular Guy Farley composed the soundtrack to the 2013 M&S ‘Magic & Sparkle” Christmas campaign, starring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Helena Bonham Carter and David Gandy. The music also featured in festive M&S food ads.

#5: Sky – Christmas Magical Moments Watch the ad
Music: Jonathan Goldstein – Magical Moments (Waiting For You) iTunes

Sky’s series of Christmas TV ads (an airport story, a family story, a love story…) featured a specially-created instrumental piece called Magical Moments (Waiting For You) by composer Jonathan Goldstein. The track was released as a single, including a new vocal version featuring Victoria Beaumont. “I love this tune, every time I hear it I get a lump in my throat,” said TV Ad Music visitor Gerald. “I agree and I cry,” said Michelle Brown. “Crazy an ad and music can do that to you. Looks like John Lewis has lost out this year.”

#4: Boots – Christmas 2013 Watch the ad
Music: Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy iTunes / Amazon

Boots’ unusual choice of Christmas ad soundtrack was a big hit with TV Ad Music visitors. The touching ad, featuring a young boy acting as secret Santa, used the song Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat, a 1984 hit single addressing issues such as loneliness, bullying and homophobia. “Best ad for Xmas 2013, beats John Lewis and M&S,” commented Mags. “Really think it’s great, a shy, thoughtful lad who thought a little kindness would not go amiss for some special people.”

#3: Tesco – Nothing Better Than Christmas Watch the ad
Music: Rod Stewart – Forever Young (Piano Version) iTunes / Amazon

There were several Tesco ads this Christmas, but it was this main one, showing a family growing up through a compilation of Christmas home movie footage, that really hit the mark (despite some dodgy ageing make-up), soundtracked by the piano version of Rod Stewart’s Forever Young.

#2: Google Nexus 7 – Far From Home Watch the ad
Music: Slade – Everyday iTunes / Amazon

It’s perhaps a surprise to see Google at number 2 in our chart rather than one of the big retailers, but the tech behemoth really touched visitors’ hearts with this ad, featuring a Dad working away at sea at Christmas. The soundtrack is from a band we’re well used to hearing at Christmas – glam rockers Slade – but the song was one of their less well-know treats, the 1974 number 3 hit Everyday. It was re-released as a single to coincide with its use in this ad. “As a former chief engineer I can totally relate to this ad,” said Stuart Mounsey. “I even bought this single when it first came out!”

#1: Lidl – Christmas Magic
Music: The Majority Says – Little Things

The most popular TV Ad Music this Christmas is a One Direction cover provided by supermarket Lidl in its “A Lidl Christmas Magic” TV ads. The One Direction track Little Things is performed for the ad by Swedish band The Majority Says, led by vocalist Hanna Antonsson. “This is the best version of this song ever!” said TV Ad Music visitor Charlie. “I cannot understand why their record company has not released it.” The cover version, which was arranged by music supervisors Platinum Rye, isn’t currently available but you can watch a live performance below.
